It is Time to Wake Up
Wake up!
This is not about getting enough sleep or using music or yoga or exercise to help someone wake from their dance with the Sandman, this is about us as a society turning a blind eye to things around us, ignoring the opportunities we have to make a change.
Why have we turned into a society that is completely unconscious and underwater? It is though we hardly care about what is happening today, let alone tomorrow. Time for us to wake up. Time for us to take a step forward and make a significant change in our work and our lives today. Believe we can make a difference in our lives.
We need to make the conscious choice to do something positive in our lives. What is happening right now that you can support? What is happening right now that you can take action on? What are you afraid of?
Most of us go through life mechanistically.
We wake up, stumble to the coffee pot, drag a brush through our teeth and hair, run out the door. Most of this time and activity you are staring at your phone. Your commute is rarely one of engagement with your seatmate, or with the person near you. You stare at your phone. You go to work, get some tasks done, but just enough to keep the boss off your back, checking your phone throughout the day, waiting for the clock to tell you it is time to leave. Head home, with your face pasted to the glass on your phone.
You have no awareness, you have no idea what is happening around you. You have become a character in Wall-E. You do the same thing EVERY day.
All of a sudden you glance up and blink the fog from your eyes and it is the end of the year.
Is that life? Is that what you are meant to be? At what point in your life did you decide to become complacent? At what point did you decide to just shrug your shoulders and say “meh”? Why did you choose to sell your soul just for the sake of a paycheck?
As a kid growing up, did you say to yourself, “I want to grow up to be a mediocre manager?” Or was it, “I only want to play recreational sports, no major leagues for me.” You said you were going to be an astronaut and go to the moon, but you went to Texas instead? Why did you give up? Because it was hard?
Who are you and what do you want?
Take stock of what you are doing today. Is what you are doing today the thing that you want to be doing? Or are you going to continue through life eyes half-closed doing the same thing day in and day out?
Every day you choose to do the same thing. Yes, it is a choice. The most obvious choice is that you choose not to make an improvement in yourself, in your work, or in your products. You choose to sell the same thing over and over again without making improvements. Never changing. You are just clipping coupons.
Wake up! Stop making excuses.
You will not say to yourself that you can’t do something! Are you saying that it is impossible to do that? Why are you letting fear freeze you in your place? Use fear to your advantage. Use it to break out of this cocoon of comfort you have built around yourself, out of fear of failure. You need to move forward, you need to do something real with your life. Wake up! It is another day, stop letting the minutes tick by because you will never get them back. Do something with them now!
Waking up also means checking to see where you are at. Are you in the same spot as you were yesterday? Time to climb out of that rut. Challenge yourself! Find something that you are extremely uncomfortable doing and try to do it.
Expect to fail, because you will. But try again. And again. Try to master it! Go through the effort of learning a completely new task with a skill that you are completely unfamiliar with. While you are doing this, share your knowledge with somebody. Find a mentee and take them under your wing. Begin to train them, to guide them and help them become leaders. Help them to become greater than you are!
Start a side business, a side hustle, that will force you to practice your new skills or that hobby that you have been talking about but never take it seriously. Become a professional at it. Work on turning it into a business. Stop watching TV, stop staring at your phone, stop playing games. Stop wasting time. Use that time to develop and grow something new. Volunteer.
Learn to steal like an artist by looking at what some of the experts and leaders, what are those professionals doing? Can you take what they are doing and do the same thing or even build on it? Leverage their experience, their knowledge. Use it as a bridge to cross the chasm you put before yourself when you want to try something.
Start measuring your results. Work to get more done in the day by tracking your activities. Load computer tracking software like RescueTime on your computer see where you are wasting your time. It will be eye-opening. Take the time to put together a list of priorities and work on one thing on your list. Nothing else. No more multitasking and learn to finish your tasks to completion.
Be active.
Be engaged.
Be social (in the physical sense not electronically).
Be responsible.
No matter what, do what you need to do to make this a better place. To make yourself a better person.
Do not sit back and complain. Do not sit and armchair quarterback the situation. Show yourself and show the world that you are a person of action and not just words! Stop going through life in a coma.
Do not wake up tomorrow thirty pounds heavier, receding hairlines, no new knowledge, running in the same ruts you have been running in. Do something now so that you can kill any possible regrets you may have. Grab your time now, it’s never too late. It will be hard work. Stick it out, have the discipline and the fortitude to get stronger, better, faster, every day.
Start right now!
Go forth and be brilliant.
